This one-day workshop brings together approximately 60 researchers, policymakers, NGO practitioners, and funders to understand democratic erosion and co-design concrete responses.
As our main problem statement we focus on four thematic areas:
- Attacks on institutions: How should civil society organisations respond when institutions that are crucial for constitutional democracy get attacked? Prominent examples are the independence of the judiciary and electoral institutions meant to guarantee electoral fairness.
- Democratic commitment: What can civil society organisations do to enhance democratic attitudes and respect for democratic norms among citizens and politicians?
- Law: How can civil society organisation effectively mobilise the law in defence of democracy and the rule, even when the integrity of the judiciary becomes a problem?
- Civil society: How should civil society organisations respond when they themselves become the object of attacks?
